11/29/12 – Garbage Everywhere

Our bus dropped us off at the North East corner of the walled city and we walked alongside the East wall to reach the Lion’s Gates, one of two gates on the Eastern wall, but the only one that is open.  The amount of garbage that I saw on my short walk was appalling.  It seems as though the “Holy City” could use a lesson in self-respect.  Most disturbing were the piles of garbage that had accumulated directly underneath holes in the walls above.  The people inside the city must have believed that these were magic holes that made the garbage that passed through them disappear.  The ignorance!

But Jerusalem is a pilgrimage site.  People from all the major religions will travel here no matter how much garbage is in the streets.  How could I expect there to be any will to keep the place clean?
