11/25/12 – Setting Sail

Our final stop of the day was a kibbutz where we would board a boat and ferry back to Tiberius.  Amnon described a kibbutz as “communism, the democratic way” and “communism without the Russian or Chinese style violence and oppression”.  In other words: the good kind of communism.

Halfway to Tiberius they cut the boat’s motors and silence fell upon us.  I quickly turned to survey the crowd from my spot on the bow to make sure they weren’t carrying out an impromptu baptism on the non-believer.  It turned out that Sr. Jocelyn wanted to do some readings in the silent calm of the Sea of Galilee.

With readings complete and night falling the engines were fired up and we slowly chugged our way up to the dock.  Dad and I joked about how there couldn’t possibly be any fish in the Sea, a fact confirmed by numerous “no fishing” signs and Amnon having told us that the fishery had essentially collapsed and many fishermen had turned to making tourist souvenirs for their livelihood.
Tilapia from China, this skeptic no longer had any doubt.

The throwing of the nets into a fishless sea was a purely symbolic gesture
